First Young Adult Class in Jyekundo, Tibet

Left and Right in Red and Blue Coats are the two teachers of the class. The class of 34 had one monk, 3 women, 4 older children and 26 young men.

These students started class everyday at 8AM in the darkness of early morning. They prepared their own meals and kept their classroom and living quarters clean. Language and math classes were held during the day and Tibetan history/culture held at night. They had home work every day and almost never left the study/living space. At the end of the 3 months the best students could write short paragraphs in Chinese and everyone could read and write the alphabet and had basic spoken language skills.

Now they will return to the villages to work during the spring and summer. All wish to continue to study and if we can find sponsors we wil begin an advanced class for these students and a new beginning class. Along with these sections of Chinese Language, Math and Tibetan History/Culture we have been asked to start a class of Tibetan Language and Culture along with math and a section that offers Tibetan language, math and maternal/child health care. Each 3 month section of 30 students is $3000. This includes rental of a house with a kitchen, hiring three teachers, and all school supplies. The students supply their own bedding, yak dung for cooking fuel and heating, and food.
